Daechan Heo is a media art critic, curator, and educator whose work explores the evolving landscape of art shaped by technology and media. His research centers on the concept of “friction”: the tensions and encounters that arise when human creators meet nonhuman actors involved in artistic production, including AI models, biological materials, datasets, and interfaces. Through this framework, he examines the operational conditions of contemporary technology-based art and the forms of resistance that emerge within them.
With an academic background in art studies and design studies, Heo works across media art, AI art, bioart, game culture, interfaces, and sensory experience. He has connected the landscape of contemporary Korean art through criticism, publishing, curating, and education. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of ALICEON, a media culture and arts platform, and is also active as an executive board member of the Korean Society of Media & Arts and a senior board member of the Design Convergence Society of Korea. Through these roles, he contributes to public and scholarly discussions on technological culture, media art, and design research.
His major exhibitions and curatorial projects include Open Media Art Festival at Oil Tank Culture Park; design without Design at Total Museum of Contemporary Art; Gray Box Area at KIAF; Slippery Reality: Expanding the Senses, Reconfiguring Boundaries at the Surim Cultural Foundation; Media Anatomy: Brainstorming for Media Anatomy at ARKO; TECHNO-SPHERE with the Gyeonggi Content Agency; and Artifacts through the Creator’s Eyes with the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.
He has also designed and directed artist education, mentoring, and professional development programs for AT&D School, the G-MAP Digital Art & Culture Lab, the Asia Culture Center’s professional training program, Art Korea Lab, the Creative Arts Education Lab of the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, the Technology-Based Disability Arts Creation Lab of the Korea Disability Arts & Culture Center, and Hyundai Motor Group’s ZER01NE.
Heo co-initiated and directed Re:spect Media Art of Korea since 2000, a research project on Korean media artists jointly organized by Art Center Nabi and ALICEON. He also co-planned and co-authored the resulting publication, Re:spect: Korean Media Art since 2000 (2024).
